Another test.

Of course there’s another test.

The Key of Hades has been in the Blockhouse for over a century, and not because no one has known to look for it.

We aren’t the only ones who have tried this.

But we do hope to be the ones who finally succeed.

“How do we prove we’re worthy?” I ask.

“Simple,” Nereida responds. “You must use your magic to prove your connection to the element of water.”

She watches us expectantly, and my heart sinks. Because her request might be simple for fae—at least, for the fae connected to their element.

But for us?

Kip’s words about how we’d be out of luck without magic float through my mind.

I glance at the others. Tristan’s eyes are stony, Connor seems lost in thought, and Hazel’s chewing nervously on her lower lip.

“How?” Connor finally asks.

“By showing me your magic, of course.” Nereida’s laugh is melodic, like water. “Unless… you don’t have magic?”

Hazel’s glaring at Nereida as if she wants to shoot fire at the water sprite straight from her eyes. Connor looks so determined that I worry he’s about to shift into his wolf form and try to rush at the sprite to use brute force to get through the door. Tristan’s gaze is far off, as if his mind is whirring at a million miles per second, and I can’t even imagine what’s going on in there.

“Oh.” Nereida frowns. “Are the four of you arids?”

“We don’t have water magic,” Connor confirms, steady and grounded.

“Then I’m afraid I can’t grant you access to the Blockhouse. Thank you for your attempt, but it’s not possible for anyone to survive what awaits inside without any magical abilities.”

Disappointment crosses her eyes, and her form ripples, as if her edges are melting into the surrounding mist.

“Wait!” Tristan calls out, and he steps forward, his arms held confidently by his sides.

Nereida’s form solidifies once more, and she tilts her head, curious about what he has to say.

“Yes?” she asks.

“We’re not arids,” Tristan says. “We do have magic.”

“Eamon,” Hazel hisses through gritted teeth, using the name of the fae he’s disguised as.

Tristan turns to her, his eyes hard. “We didn’t get this far to accept defeat now,” he says, and then he looks back to Nereida and continues. “Do we specifically need water magic to gain entrance to the Blockhouse? Or will any type of magic suffice?”

The sprite raises her chin slightly, looking more intrigued than defensive. “You must use magic to prove your connection to the element of water,” she repeats what she said earlier, giving no further explanation than that.

“So, no. And all the elements are connected,” Connor says, and I don’t know which is crazier—the fact that Tristan has all but revealed that we’re not who we’re claiming to be, or that Connor is backing up Tristan’s decision. “We simply need to figure out how each of our elements connects with water, then focus on that aspect of our power in our demonstration to Nereida.”

Our elements, his words repeat in my mind, and my heart drops.
